The social power of comics

During the last three years, Comic Art Europe initiated a research project to test and highlight the social power of comics.

In order to do this, each partner has established partnerships with educational structures in their country and conducted the following literacy workshops:

  • Lyon BD Organisation, in partnership with Langues Comme Une, worked with asylum seekers
  • The Belgian Comics Art Museum, in partnership with la Maison des Femmes de Molenbeek, worked with isolated women
  • Escola Joso, in partnership with ASSÍS, Reception Center for the homeless people, worked with homeless people
  • The Lakes International Comics Art Festival, in partnership with Abraham Moss Community School, worked with primary school students in a disadvantaged area where many of the students were from refugee families where English was not a first language.

Yesterday, during the “Comics up close” event in Manchester, our partners shared their insights on comics as an aid to literacy. They did this during some interesting presentations. If you want to find out more about our literacy workshops, you can find it on this page on the website.
